I found this beauty at a thrift store last week.
I spent $3.50 on it.
I had planned to sell it but then did my research. It will not be in my shop. Sorry. Moral of the story: always do your research and please start shopping at thrift stores! You will be pleasantly surprised.
I'm so excited to see my brother tomorrow! Ollie starts school tomorrow!! It's going to be a big day!!!

My brother's coming back to Kansas City!
He has been all over the globe these last few years, working on his masters and teaching English in South Korea. He'll be back for a few months and we are sooo excited!

hope you all had a beautiful Thursday. Our reserved little man had his preschool orientation this morning and it went very well. We were soooo proud of him!!!
Sophia is still smiling and loving her new school (so are we!).
So here are some things that are making me smile this lovely Thursday...
I was wandering Anthro with my little buddy when the most magical music came on. I immediately asked the shop girl who it was. Christina Courtin has the dreamiest, torchy, lounge-y, Regina Spector-y quality. (For some reason I am unable to put her video on but please go to youtube and check out her singing "Foreign Country".)
I am also nuts about all the pattern mixing I see going on. It is so interesting and so much fun! I firmly believe that if you wear it, it matches. Just wear it with confidence.

I tried my own pattern mixing just yesterday. It was a bit obvious with the black and white, but still a lot more fun and sooo comfortable.
While browsing the latest email update from Anthro, I ran across loads of lovelies (of course), but one really stood out.
The style and color of the dress is perfect but the knockout detail for me is the choice of brown suede boots. Ballet flats would be an obvious choice but the chocolatey color is fantastic. I LOVE it. This would be an easy one to try!

My baby girl started kindergarten today.
She is such a strong and loving little girl...her teachers are so lucky if I say so myself.
Dropping her off this morning left me feeling blue. I immediately missed her.
She did very well on her first day and when I picked her up she had a smile on her face. What more could I ask for?
I just watched the end of "Dan in Real Life". Such a lovely movie. I think the soundtrack by Sondre Lerche is one of the best. Don't even bother checking it out. Just buy it. You will not be disappointed.

I have such a romantic, nostalgic image of the county fair. Every summer I pine for Fern's good old New England carnival and 4H competition.
And although there are no little girls in gingham dresses, the fair never seems to disappoint. The kids, Gigi, and I went to the Parkville Festival yesterday afternoon and delighted in all things carnie. It was a beautiful day for lemonade and a ferris wheel ride.

We didn't get a funnel cake and we passed on all the kitschy crafts, but we had lots of good fun. Maybe next year we'll go later and enjoy the lights, munch on some kettle corn, and listen to some bluegrass.

In a roundabout way, I stumbled upon an amazing artist. She combines so many things that I love...vintage serving pieces repurposed in the most unexpected way. Esther Coombs finds dicarded items and gives them a new life, using them as canvases for her art.
What a fabulous way to reduce, reuse, recycle.
It is very important to always introduce the unexpected or whimsical into everyday life. Matching is boring! Please, don't match your bag and your shoes. There are so many stunning and extremely afforable vintage clutches to be found in your local flea market. They are the icing on the cake and no one else at the bar will have a bag like you! When we go out on the town, I never leave home without one.

Or...you could pin on a giant brooch (another easily located vintage item...you probably already have some in your top drawer) or tie a scarf around your neck. Just don't be so serious all the time.

It was only a matter of time before I hit a dry spell. Be patient. I've been spending a little more time getting things ready in my shop, working on changing up some of my pics and updating the site. I am still in need of a shop banner but am looking into it. I will be searching for inspiration on all my favorite blogs, etsy, and the little, lovely bit of summer that's left. We are crossing our fingers that tomorrow will be rain-free so we can swim, play at the park, or enjoy the zoo. Sophia and I have made a long list of activities we must do before she's off to school.

What a date night! It will be early to bed for us this evening. We started our evening at 1924 Main where we enjoyed some classic cocktails and an incredibly knowledgable bartender. We highly recommend the Ginger Rickey. After a couple drinks, we were escorted downstairs to Manifesto, a speak-easy style club with some seriously delicious artisan cocktails. Only 48 people can fit at a time and the outside entrance is a buzzer at the back of the building in an alleyway. I was so impressed with my Beautiful Red Bell made with Beefeater Gin, red bell pepper, lime, and mint. It was so refreshing. And as a beer and wine girl, the first cocktail I absolutely adored. Keith got really daring and ordered up the Smokin' Choke made with applewood smoked Jim Beam, Cynar, maple syrup, lemon and orange zest. Fabulous!!! After only one divine drink, we were off to our final destination.
While at the Folly for Sophia's recital, I learned that the historic theater had a very colorful burlesque period. So when planning our date night, Gypsy Rose Lee popped into my head. We ended our night out at The Czar Bar for a burlesque show. It was campy and loads of fun.
I detest painfully hip hang-outs. These were all the real thing, serving up top-notch service, drinks, and entertainment. They weren't just places for obnoxious "hipsters" to show off their duds and love of anything that's poured into a martini glass. Please check out these authentic spots.

Tomorrow night is date night!!! I have taken on the planning and I am super psyched. I don't want to give away any secrets but I'll reveal our agenda soon enough. We'll be kicking it old-school with an edge. Intrigued? I thought so. Have you read Amy Sedaris' "I Like You"? If not, you must! She writes that the moment she begins her event planning, cigarette in hand, she starts planning her outfit. Oh Amy, you hit so close to home. So you see, I get the combined pleasure of a night out on the town and picking out the perfect dress. Simple pleasures. What can I say?
